This course is designed to help students develop basic skills in observation, proportion, shading, and color theory, as well as essential shapes. Each class consists of 1 hour of instruction followed by 30 minutes of practice. The course runs for 8 weeks.
Week 1: Introduction to Drawing & Observation
Class Objective:
Understand the importance of observation in drawing. Learn basic lines, forms, and shapes.
Content:
- Intro to Drawing tools
- Drawing shapes
- Contour drawing.
Practice:
Sketching everyday objects
Week 2: Proportion & Scale
Class Objective:
Learn how to proportion objects in relation to one another.
Content:
- Scale and proportion.
- Drawing objects in relation to each other.
- Human body Proportions.
Practice:
Drawing objects with different sizes.
Week 3: Shading Techniques
Class Objective:
Learn basic shading to create depth in drawings.
Content:
- Introduction to light source and shadows.
- Shading techniques (hatching, cross-hatching, blending).
- Practicing shading on shapes.
Practice:
Shading basic geometric shapes.
Week 4: Introduction to Color Theory
Class Objective:
Understanding the basics of color and how to use them effectively.
Content:
- Introduction to the color wheel (primary, secondary, tertiary colors).
- Basic color schemes (complementary, analogous).
- Warm vs. cool colors.
Practice:
Creating a simple color wheel.
Week 5: Applying Color Techniques
Class Objective:
Explore how to apply color using various media.
Content:
- Techniques for using colored pencils, markers, and watercolors.
- Practice with blending colors and creating gradients.

Drawing and coloring simple objects using learned color techniques.
Week 6: Composition & Putting it All Together
Class Objective:
Combining observation, proportion, shading, and color for a complete piece.
Content:
- Introduction to composition and balancing a drawing.
- How to plan and arrange elements on the page.
Practice:
Final project: Drawing a still life or landscape using all the techniques learned throughout the course.
